Did you know it's nearly Small Business Saturday? We might have only just had Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but now it's small businesses' time to shine bright like a diamond, with a day that specifically encourages consumers to shop local. But it’s not just another shopping event, Small Business Saturday is a day where we can pause, take a breath, and remember why small businesses are really so important.

After all, small businesses are the heart and soul of our communities - and with the recent budget not going down so well with many including the British Independent Retailers Association, it's all the more important to celebrate them! Whether you’re a local cafe where people kick start their day with a strong cup of tea or coffee (much needed in this weather!), an online store selling one-of-a-kind gifts perfect for Christmas, or a hairdresser giving people movie-style makeovers (Princess Diaries, anyone?), you have the authenticity and personality that keeps people coming back again, again, and again - so make sure you make the most of this opportunity to shine!

Just a bit about Small Business Saturday...

Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots campaign that aims to highlight small business success and encourages consumers to shop local. It started way back in 2010 in the US and has been in the UK since 2013, growing significantly year-on-year, according to organisers. Taking place on the first Saturday in December each year, for 2024 it will land on Saturday 7th December.

How to shine this Small Business Saturday (and beyond!)

So, are you ready to make the most of this day made for you? There's a free marketing pack from organisers to request here, as well as logos to use on your website and socials, but here are a few more ways to maximise your impact and mark the day:

Create an irresistible offer

Everyone loves a good deal, right? I know I do, and while Black Friday and Cyber Monday have only just been and gone, you can still offer a small discount or freebie to celebrate your business this Small Business Saturday. Even something as small as a sticker with every purchase is exciting for customers, so why not include one in each gift or shopping bag?

And if you have products that go perfectly together, why not offer them as a bundle? It makes it easier for customers who might not be sure what goes well with what, and gives you a fab chance to show off your expertise when it comes to pairing products. You'll also sell a bit more, and can keep these bundles going long after the day itself - especially helpful as we head closer and closer towards Christmas! Pro tip: Name your deal or bundle something fun - ‘Shop & Save Saturday’ or ‘Lovely Local Bundles’ feel more personal and special for the occasion.

Speaking of Christmas, have a read of our blog here to make sure you're as prepared as possible for the festive season - with more fab tips on your marketing, SEO, social media, and more. And on the topic of social media...

Get LOUD on social media

Social media is your free megaphone to the world, so use it to create buzz before, during, and after Small Business Saturday. You can do this with a countdown leading up to the event, or even go live on socials to give real-time updates and shout about your best products. Or why not host a mini online class related to your business, like crafting, cooking, or styling? It's a great way to boost engagement on social media on the day itself and keep shoppers coming back for more - in fact you could even turn it into a little series! What better way to again show off your expertise in your industry?

Use the day to tell your story in person and on social media too - people just love a peak behind the curtain to get to know the face and heart behind a business, and it's even more special when it's a small business. Let them know about your history with some fun facts and a bit of behind-the-scenes info - it's all about adding that personal touch, and reminding customers why your small business is oh-so-special.

And don’t forget hashtags! Use ones like #SmallBusinessSaturday, #ShopSmall, and your town or city’s name to reach local shoppers.

Show some customer love

Of course, Small Business Saturday is all about celebrating your customers as much as your business itself. Make them feel appreciated with special touches that go beyond just that initial sale on the day.

Maybe you could slip a handwritten note card into each shopper’s bag to say thank you, or you could offer bonus loyalty points or exclusive vouchers for certain products on future visits. And going back to social media - make sure to feature your customers in your posts (with their permission, of course!), using either their purchases or testimonials.

And don't forget the follow-up - keep the momentum going by sending a heartfelt email to everyone who shopped with you, and share highlights from the day, including photos and videos. Ask customers if you can use their emails in a mailing list so you can let them know about future events and sales!

Make this Small Business Saturday your best yet!

At its heart, Small Business Saturday is about more than just sales - it’s about building relationships, sharing your story, and celebrating the role your business plays in the community. Whether you’re handing out freebies, shouting on social media, or just putting up your best ‘We’re Open’ sign, every little effort counts.

So, get creative, have fun, and remember that your business is something to be proud of. Let’s make this Small Business Saturday one to remember!
