1250 micron (1.25mm)
The minimum micron value used
A key component to creating the perfect box is the thickness of the card and paper. At Tiny Box Maker we measure this in microns - one micron is equal to one thousandth of a millimetre, so the higher the micron value the thicker the material. Our boxes go from 1250 microns (1.25mm), 1500 microns (1.5mm), to 2000 microns (2mm), and 3000 microns (3mm). The thickness of the board used is governed by the rigidity you require for the box and the contents that are going inside.
1250 microns (1.25mm) - the minimum micron value used
1500 microns (1.5mm) - this value is considered depending on the box content
2000 microns (2mm) - this value is considered depending on the box content
3000 microns (3mm) - the value used for oversized boxes to support their contents
One micron is equal to one thousandth of a millimetre, so the higher the micron value the thicker your packaging material will be. This will be particularly important to note when considering factors like strength and durability, as packaging with a higher micron value will be able to withstand greater pressure and provide better protection for the products inside.
Factors like sustainability will also play a role, as materials with a higher micron value may require more resources and energy to produce, and thicker materials can often be more challenging to recycle. Opting for lightweight materials with lower micron measurements can therefore help sustainability, and using recycled materials can also help by reducing the environmental impact associated with manufacturing new packaging materials. While microns measure the thickness of paper and card, GSM, or grams per square metre, refers to the weight of paper or card per square metre. Simply put, the higher the GSM value, the heavier the material. While there is no direct correlation between GSM and microns, the two are often linked as often a material with a higher GSM value will generally have a higher micron value too - find out more on GSM and microns on our blog post here.
